Below is some information on our previous projects in Belarus.
Orphanage 5, Minsk
WEast Chernobyl began working with Orphanage 5, Minsk in September 2011. Sending our 1st group of volunteers there in 2012 as part of our Year of Diversity programme. Here volunteers worked with young people on arts projects and did some repair work around the building. Additionally WEast Chernobyl prepared a delivery of humanitarian aid to the facility (and others in Belarus) in October 2012.

Orphanage 5, Minsk
This is Orphanage 5, Minsk. It is situated on the south east side of the capital city.
Orphanage 5 provides for young people from the ages of 8 to 18, here the young people are able to be both educated and accommodated. Over the last few years the numbers of residents have dwindled down to just over 100 from, at one stage, at least 400 students. However even one young person without parental care is one too many.
The Belarusian Government is currently investigating a new approach to the care of those young people designated as orphans, however nothing has been put into practice yet.
There is a great ethos within the orphanage of doing the best for their students in all aspects of their lives!
Orphanage 5 needs foreign charities to get involved in helping the orphanage to obtain much-needed funds from central government. They have seen funds from the local business sector dwindle due to the state of the Belarusian economy. This is where WEast Chernobyl plans to help. The buildings of the orphanage need a lot of repair and suffer greatly from damp. The outside recreation areas need upgrading as well.
In addition to our building programme, WEast Chernobyl also has other projects based at Orphanage 5 centered around the personal, professional and social development of the young people who are resident at Orphanage 5.
